DPS investigating reported armed robbery near BBB dorms

Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety and the Syracuse Police Department are investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m., according to a campus-wide DPS email sent Wednesday afternoon. The robbery happened on Van Buren Street near the Brewster, Brockway, and Boland dorm complex.

An SU student reported walking on Van Buren Street when a male suspect approached him, displayed a gun and demanded the student hand over his iPhone and AirPods.

The student complied and the suspect fled on foot away from campus. The suspect is described as an adult male with long hair wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, light-colored jeans and Nike sneakers.



To report a crime outside of DPS jurisdiction, a report can be filed online through the Syracuse Police Department. SPD can also be reached at (315) 422-5200.

Anyone with information regarding recent crimes can contact DPS at (315) 443-2224. Non-emergency information can be reported through the Silent Witness tool.

Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety announced new security measures and resources for people affected by Tuesday’s armed robbery near the Brewster, Brockway and Boland dorm complex in a Thursday evening campus-wide email.

DPS will begin increased security presences, late-night safety escort shuttles and check-ins with students. DPS and the Syracuse Police Department are each conducting ongoing investigations into the incident. Chief Craig Stone wrote in the email that officers are reviewing security footage from the BBB vicinity.

“I recognize how troubling it is when a member of our community is impacted by criminal activity,” Stone wrote. “The safety and well-being of our campus community is our highest priority.”

Stone encouraged anyone with information to contact DPS at (315) 443-2224 or SPD at (315) 442-5111. Shuttles run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and can be contacted for a safety escort via the Orange Safe app.
