Larcenies increase on and near campus during the beginning of the semester.

The Department of Public Safety is seeking help in an ongoing investigation of three larcenies and a vehicle theft on Syracuse University’s South Campus.

All three cars were unlocked at the time of the reported break-ins, DPS said in a campus-wide email sent Sunday night. DPS did not disclose the locations of the larcenies in the email.

The department’s daily crime log, however, shows investigations remain open for three larcenies committed in August Slocum Drive, Farm Acre Road and Lambreth Lane. The larcenies occurred on Aug. 27 and Aug. 23.

Larcenies are the most common crime on college campuses and occur more often at the start of a new school year, DPS Chief Bobby Maldonado told The Daily Orange in August.

“Students just get here, and they’re not really paying close attention to their belongings or they’re leaving their car doors open,” Maldonado said.

To avoid a potential theft, DPS recommends keeping cars locked at all times, reporting suspicious activity and storing valuables out of plain sight in secure locations.

Any information regarding the thefts or any other campus crime should be reported to DPS at (315) 443-2224. Anonymous non-emergency information can be sent to DPS through the Silent Wellness Tool at Secure.EthicsPoint.com.
