Memorial service in Hendricks to honor life of student

A memorial service for Jason Morales, a senior sport management major who died last month, will be held Monday afternoon in Hendricks Chapel.

The service will be held at 4 p.m. and provide an opportunity for the campus community to remember Morales and celebrate his life, said Thomas Wolfe, senior vice president and dean of student affairs.

“It’s a really important time for the community to come together and show support at this time,” Wolfe said.

Morales, who was 23, died early in the morning on Feb. 23 after he was hit by a car in New York City. He left behind a girlfriend and 2-year-old son.

At the time of his death, he was interning with the marketing department in the St. John’s University athletic department in New York City and finishing his senior capstone.

During his time at Syracuse University, Morales was active in the Phi Iota Alpha fraternity and often worked with members of the Student Association. He also attended Onondaga Community College, where he served as head coach of the college’s club football team.

Hendricks Dean Tiffany Steinwert, Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Director Eddie Banks-Crosson and Phi Iota Alpha all worked together to organize the service.

The service will consist of a series of remembrances from staff, students and community members, as well as scripture readings, songs and a tribute video, Steinwert said in an email.

“By coming together, we find comfort and refuge, as well as strength and resolve in and among each other,” Steinwert said. “It is important that the University community have this opportunity to grieve, remember and celebrate.”

Morales’ family held a funeral service for him in early March, which SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor attended.

The university has committed a scholarship to Morales’ two-year-old son, Noel, when he graduates high school and is admitted to SU.
