Several arrests made in weekend crimes

Several robberies occurred near the Syracuse University campus during the weekend.

The Syracuse Police Department made arrests in some of these incidents, and all investigations are ongoing.

Two men robbed an SU student on the 500 block of Clarendon Avenue on Saturday night, according to a Department of Public Safety notice sent to all students.

The student reported that he was walking west on Clarendon Avenue at approximately 10:21 p.m. when he was approached by two men walking toward him. The men then surrounded the student on both sides, hit him in the mouth, knocked him to the ground and kicked his head and ribs. One of the suspects then reached into the student’s pocket and took his cash, according to the notice.

The suspects were last seen traveling west on Clarendon Avenue toward Ostrom Avenue. The case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made, according to the notice.

The Syracuse Police Department has made several arrests in connection with a series of strong-arm robberies that occurred Saturday night.

Early Sunday morning, a DPS officer saw a gray minivan parked on the corner of Madison Street and Ostrom Avenue. He then saw a black male wearing a maroon hooded sweatshirt, fitting the description of one of the robbery suspects, get into the van, according to an SPD news release.

The van was stopped on the 1200 block of East Water Street until SPD arrived and took over the call. Items from several previous robberies were recovered in the vehicle and three suspects were found in the vehicle, according to the release.

The three suspects were charged with robbery in the second-degree and criminal possession of stolen property in relation to two Saturday-night incidents, according to the release.

In the first incident, two SU graduate students were robbed at Fellows and Euclid avenues at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday night. The victims, a male and a female, reported that they were assaulted, and an iPhone, cash, credit cards and a purse were taken, according to the release.

In the second incident, a 20-year-old male SU student reported that he was robbed on the 400 block of Stratford Avenue on Saturday at 10:50 p.m. The student reported that he was assaulted and robbed of cash, jewelry and a debit card. He suffered a broken nose and a chipped tooth, according to the release.

One of the suspects arrested in connection with the two previous robberies was also positively identified in an early Sunday-morning strong-arm robbery, according to the release.

A 20-year-old male State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry student was the victim of an attempted robbery at 12:18 a.m. on Sunday on the 200 block of Roosevelt Avenue, according to the release.

The student reported that he was walking south on Roosevelt Avenue when he noticed three black males following him. The men then confronted him and asked if he had a lighter. The men then punched the student in the face, pulled him to the ground and punched and kicked him several times. The men demanded the student’s wallet but the student refused and fought back, causing the suspects to flee north on Roosevelt Avenue, according to the release.

No property was taken from the student and the student refused medical treatment, according to the release.

The investigation into all of the previous incidents is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact SPD.
