Matt and Kim concert at Westcott Theater Thursday to start at 10 p.m.; officials continue to investigate cause of ceiling tile collapse

Almost two days after a ceiling tile at the Westcott Theater collapsed and injured several Dada Life concertgoers, the sold-out Matt and Kim concert remains scheduled for Thursday night.

The 7 p.m. concert start time has been moved back three hours to 10 p.m., according to a release posted on the theater’s Facebook page at 5:36 p.m. Thursday night.

Those unable to attend the sold-out show due to the time change will be able to receive a refund through Frontgate Tickets by calling 888-512-SHOW. The deadline for refunds is 9 p.m. Thursday night, according to the release.

“We’ve been cleared to open up and tonight’s MATT & KIM show will go on as planned,” the release read. “Thank you for understanding and waiting this out with us.”



The time of the concert was pushed back in order to “accommodate load time” and get the theater set up, said a Westcott Theater employee.

All upcoming concerts at the theater will go on as scheduled, the employee said.

Kevin Patrick, general manager for Matt and Kim, said in an email that the concert had not been canceled as of 11:24 a.m.

“We are here and waiting on official word,” he said.

At about 12:50 p.m. The Westcott Theater tweeted from its account, @WestcottTheater: “TONIGHT!  @MattandKim w/ special guests @oberhofermusic. All Ages | Doors 7pm | Tix ____. See you then!”

The theater then almost immediately deleted the tweet and posted another tweet reiterating the uncertain status of the show: “Apologies, a previously scheduled tweet was just released. Please stay tuned for news on tonight’s show.”

In a 1 p.m. Facebook post, the theater said to look for updates about Thursday’s show on its page and that more information would be available soon.

A Datsik concert slated for Wednesday night was rescheduled for Jan. 15 after the ceiling tile collapsed. All tickets purchased for the concert will be valid at the later date, according to a release posted on The Westcott Theater’s Facebook page.

The theater also has concerts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Syracuse inspection officials are still looking into what caused the tile to fall but have not yet reached a definite conclusion.

Tom Steinberg, assistant director of the Division of Code Enforcement, said an engineer is still inspecting the venue, but the collapse of the tile is likely related to the high level of moisture in the ceiling.

The tile that fell was located above the right side of the stage and was part of the theater’s drop ceiling, which sits about 2 feet below the building’s original plaster ceiling, Steinberg said.

Officials believe that a piece of plaster fell or was lying on the drop ceiling, causing the tile to break. Time and constant bass vibrations also contributed to the tile’s collapse, Steinberg said.
