Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner signs ordinance banning bath salts
Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner signed an ordinance Friday banning the synthetic drug known as “bath salts” in Syracuse.
The ordinance makes the sale and possession of bath salts a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $1,000. The Syracuse Common Council passed the ordinance Wednesday.
“Today is an important first step in taking synthetic drugs off our streets,” Miner said in a press release. “I look forward to working with our partners on the state level on a ban effort to make our law enforcement efforts as effective as possible.”
Syracuse University Department of Public Safety Chief Tony Callisto and Kevin Quinn, senior vice president for public affairs at SU, could not immediately be reached for comment.
